I have never looked at all of these objects in the same place before. These works aren’t mine, yet the exhibition is my solo show.

To make a living I do various technical jobs in the field of art in New York City. I work as an assistant to artists. I make videos. I install exhibitions. My partner is an artist and I often help her in the studio, as she helps me. Many of my friends are artists too and their practices almost always require collective action at some point. I also work for people who don’t make art, but nonetheless require the production of material content. This activity occupies a large part of my time so that most of my days are spent in the space of other people’s practices. I play a support role in these activities, and sometimes a catalytic one. Occasionally, I am there to do something unexpected.

25 October, 2015—12 May, 2019 is an exhibition of works that have been loaned to me and results from these relationships. It presents some of my commitments over the last five years. It traces my activity and engagement, and gives form to a variety of supporting roles. — Jason Hirata
