The book “Das Lokale ist nicht lokal“ (The Local Is Not Local) is being published to accompany Maximiliane Baumgartner’s exhibition of the same name at the Kunstverein Nürnberg—Albrecht Dürer Gesellschaft as part of her Marianne Defet Painting Scholarship. The publication is a collection of contributions about Baumgartner’s work, which combines elements of painting, critical pedagogy, and artistic research. Based on the premise that “the local is not local,” Baumgartner’s most recent works examine the work and reception of the Nuremberg artist Dore Meyer-Vax (1908–1980) as well as her democratic pictorial approach from a radical pedagogical perspective. In her work, Baumgartner consistently draws parallels between Dore Meyer-Vax and the artist Eva Eisenlohr (1891–1977) and, as a producer of images herself, looks at the two artists as producers of images. Underlying this is an artistic approach that understands the past as a place for negotiating the present.
In addition to an image section, the publication includes new texts by Paula Kommoss, Clemens Krümmel, Thorsten Schneider, and Nele Kaczmarek, as well as a conversation between Wolfgang Brauneis and Maximiliane Baumgartner. The book is designed by Claudia Kugler, it is published by Kunstverein Nürnberg — Albrecht Dürer Gesellschaft and Institut für moderne Kunst, Nürnberg.
Following the intervention “Ort zu sein“ on October 26 at 2 pm, the book will be presented to the public in a discussion between the participants the same day at 3:30 pm. Coffee, cake and drinks will be served at the bar.
Maximiliane Baumgartner’s exhibition “Das Lokale ist nicht lokal“ as well as the accompanying interventions and publication were all made possible by the Marianne Defet Painting Scholarship and its sponsors as well as the Kunststiftung NRW. The realization of the publication was supported by the Stiftung Zumikon. We would like to sincerely thank all our sponsors.
